“Wells Street bridge, which was built in 1922, replacing a bridge built in 1896, which replaced one built in 1872. Here’s a bit of history from the archives: “The first Wells Street bridge was built in 1840. It was of wood, and cost $3,000. It gave way to another wooden bridge in 1851 and still another in 1862. The latter was burned in the fire of 1871. The first iron bridge at Wells Street came in 1872, costing $22,000.” — Chicago Daily Tribune, Sept. 28, 1921.”
